How we source energy

AGL Somerton

Delivering peak-power for the times when it matters most.

AGL Somerton power stations

Located in Melbourne's outer north, AGL's Somerton power station provides valuable backup electricity supply to Victorians during periods of high demand or in the event of a major failure of the transmission system.

The Somerton power station houses four gas turbine generators in parallel, on a north-south axis, each with its own exhaust stack. The top of the exhaust vent is the highest part of the plant and is approximately 14.75 metres high above ground level.

While the facility generally operates three or four hours at a time to meet demand during summer and winter weekday mornings and afternoons, it is able to run 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Community

AGL invited our neighbours in the Somerton industrial zone to four information sessions at the Hume Global Learning Centre in May 2017. The people that attended the sessions heard more about Somerton’s role in AGL’s broader energy portfolio.

Environmental management framework

We're committed to protecting the environment in all of our activities and AGL Somerton is responsibly operated and maintained to minimise adverse environmental effects. All operation and maintenance activities are conducted in accordance with AGL’s HSE Policy.
