About the project

AGL Energy is proposing to build, operate and maintain a battery of approximately 500 megawatts (MW) and up to 2,000 megawatt-hour (MWh) capacity in Hopeland QLD.

The location for the proposed battery is south of Chinchilla on Whyalla Rd.

If the project goes ahead, the Queensland battery is expected to have the capability to provide firming capacity to the NEM as well as additional services to assist grid stability.

The project could provide up to 200 jobs during the construction phase and up to 6 full time jobs during operation.

Community and stakeholder feedback

AGL is engaging with the local community, State and Federal government, Western Downs Regional Council, Barunggam Local Aboriginal Land Council, and residents and business owners in the region about the project.

We aim to collect feedback about the proposed project during the planning phase to address any issues or concerns early in the process.

AGL lodged the Development Approval (DA) for this project with the Western Downs Regional Council in December 2024.

AGL will address any issues or questions and will work closely with the community and key stakeholders throughout the project.
