Our commitments

Reconciliation Action Plan

Our Reconciliation Action Plan builds on our solid foundation of respect for Traditional Custodians and our Purpose, Powering Australian Life.

AGL recognises the First Nations people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we work, and we acknowledge those communities' continuing connections to their lands, waters and cultures. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present.

Our vision for a unified and inclusive Australia

AGL’s vision for reconciliation is a unified and inclusive Australia where First Nations people are respected and have equal voice, rights and opportunities for prosperity.

We will bring our vision to life by:

  • Truthfully acknowledging the past and how it has influenced where we are today
  • Working towards an inclusive future together
  • Being a trusted partner for First Nations communities in locations where we operate and are planning future projects
  • Supporting tangible economic benefits for First Nations communities through our investment in energy transition

We strive to make this our norm, our way of life.

AGL recognises First Nations people as the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we work, and acknowledges those communities’ continuing connections to their lands, waters and cultures. We pay our respects to their Elders past and present.

Our Reconciliation Action Plan

AGL is strongly committed to contributing to reconciliation with First Nations communities. We have been building relationships and cultural understanding with Traditional Custodians of lands on which we operate for many years.

In July 2023 we launched our second Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan, formalising our commitment in a detailed framework that speaks to First Nations engagement and reconciliation, bringing our existing and future diverse work streams together.

As Australia’s leading energy retailer, we have both the responsibility and the opportunity to contribute significantly to Australia’s reconciliation effort by better understanding First Nations cultures and histories; building trusted relationships with the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we operate; and collaborating on opportunities for employment and economic participation.

Uluru Statement from the Heart

AGL supports the invitation of the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

We thank First Nations people, the original custodians, for taking care of this country for thousands of years and we are excited about what we are yet to learn and what we can achieve together to build a better future.

Our Reconciliation Engagement Network

Our Reconciliation Engagement Network was formed in October 2016 to recognise, respect and raise awareness about First Nations histories and cultures across AGL.

The Network’s aim is to create a safe and inclusive workplace for our First Nations employees and those who are interested in Indigenous affairs, as well as celebrate and recognise significant events and dates through coordinated activations across the year such as NAIDOC Week and National Reconciliation Week.

The Network is supported by employees from across our corporate offices and generations site who are passionate about advocating for reconciliation, cultural engagement and learning.

'Lighting the path forward' by Keisha Leon

'Lighting the path forward' by Keisha Leon

We are delighted to share our artwork ‘Lighting the path forward’ by Keisha Leon, a Waanyi and Kalkadoon designer/artist and founder of Leon Design, who uses narratives to reflect her own experiences; and connecting conceptual design with social outcomes, to change the narrative for the future.

‘Lighting the path forward’ depicts AGL’s vision for:

  • creating pathways to meaningful change and sustainable futures;
  • advocating voices and values from the top to the bottom. Leading change; and
  • caring for Country and connecting people in a meaningful and impactful way.

We look from where we have come from and where we are going. Lighting the path to point us in the right direction. The land guides the pathways and connects us together. It is our duty to take the path unknown, be guided and make way for a brighter future.

Community, Careers and Diversity

Cultivating respectful, trusted and meaningful connections with the Traditional Owners of the lands on which we operate is critical to our success. We are committed to engaging proactively with our communities to develop relationships that will increase our cultural understanding and collaborate on opportunities for employment and economic participation. By building strong connections, we listen and learn so we can shape our community engagement approach and create consistency across the organisation when working with local Traditional Owners and communities.

AGL aspires to make a genuine difference through our partnerships with community organisations. That is why we have partnered with the Stars Foundation and Clontarf Foundation to support First Nations boys and girls to remain engaged at school and complete Year 12, with the aim to improve their education and employment prospects. Both programs provide a diverse range of activities to support their students to develop the self-esteem, confidence and life skills they need to successfully participate in school and transition into a positive and independent future.

Our goal is to create a culturally safe workplace where all our people feel comfortable, supported and respected, as well as sustainable employment opportunities for First Nations peoples. So join us now and become part of AGL!

AGL Careers

We are leveraging our procurement scope and sphere of influence to enable economic participation and wealth generation for First Nations owned businesses. Our membership to Supply Nation and Kinaway reinforces our commitment to inclusion. We continue to look for ways to increase the use of goods and services in our operations provided by First Nations suppliers, so please contact us!

Become an AGL Supplier

“For many years we have worked with Traditional Owners in places where our energy generation sites are located, from the Gurnaikurnai people who are the Traditional Owners at our Loy Yang site in Victoria, to the Kaurna people who are the Traditional Owners of our Torrens Island Power Station site and Eastwood office in South Australia.

Our RAP allows us to build on this work by capturing our commitments and holding us accountable to how we support our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander customers, communities, and employees.

As the RAP Executive Sponsor I am incredibly excited about what we are yet to learn from First Nations peoples and by what we can achieve together to build a better future."
