Simple ways to save money on moving day

We’ve put together a list of tips for planning your big move, so you’ve got more money left over to deck out your new place.

The cost of moving house can be draining – on you and your back pocket. From removal companies and cleaning to purchasing all the supplies you need, it can be an unexpectedly expensive time.

Rest assured, when it comes to connecting your energy, internet and mobile, though – you can enjoy ease and convenience when you move house with us.

Here are some more tips to keep in mind when you’re planning your move so you’ve got more money left over to deck out your new place.

Get organised

When it comes to moving home, time is money – especially when there are removalists involved.

If you are planning to call in the pros, make sure that you’re organised and ready to go before they’re scheduled to arrive. It can be tempting to do away with boxes for certain items, but remember that the more loose items you have, the more trips will be required to get them in and out of your home, and the more time this will take.

Be sure to have your boxes labelled and sealed properly so that everything travels safely and can be easily unloaded into the correct room.

And if you have pets, work out a plan for what you’ll do with them on moving day, too.

Do it yourself

It seems obvious, but hiring a truck and moving your stuff can work out to be much cheaper than hiring removalists.

Remember to consider it will probably take you longer than it takes the professionals, so wrangle up as many friends and family members as you can to help out.

Have you answered the age-old question of whether to move by yourself or hire removalists?

Sort it out

There’s no point in spending time and money moving things that you don’t really need or use anymore.

It’s a good idea to sort through your things and separate anything you don’t have to take with you. If there’s a lot of stuff that has to go, you might want to hold a garage sale. If there are only a few things, you can sell them yourself online, donate them to charity, or even give things away to friends and family.

Look at moving as a great opportunity to de-clutter and make sure that you’re not hoarding unnecessary items.

Box hire

Surprisingly, buying moving boxes to store your stuff in for the move can be quite pricey.

While it’s important to be sure that the boxes you keep your things in are sturdy and reliable enough to carry the important stuff, you don’t have to spend a fortune on cardboard boxes. Check with family and friends who have moved home recently to see if they have any boxes left over from their move. You can also ask local shops and supermarkets whether they have any spare boxes lying around.

There’s even the option to hire boxes, which is great because it means that you won’t be left with the hassle of working out what to do with all of the boxes after you’re done moving house.

Pack smart

Don’t fall into the trap of spending a fortune on packing supplies for the move. Ask any friends and family members who have recently moved to see if they have things like packing tape and bubble wrap left over from their move. You can also use things like clothing and linen to wrap your valuables in to save on bubble wrap.

We have a few extra tips to share as well that could help make your move a smoother one.
