Solar Status

Monitor your solar system’s performance 24/7

What is Solar Status?

Solar Status is a free service that monitors your solar system’s performance and helps identify potential issues that could decrease your energy generation and savings.

How is your Solar Status calculated?

To calculate your status, we take into account your net export and import solar energy data from your home’s smart meter for at least the last 30 days. We then use this data to assess how your solar system is performing against expectation. Allowances are also made for changes in weather.

If there’s a significant reduction in your solar exports over 9 days your status will change to Red.

There are 4 Solar statuses available:

Green Status

A Green Status indicates that your solar system appears to be working as expected. For example, it’s exporting solar energy to the grid in line with expectations.

Amber Status

An Amber Status indicates that your solar system isn’t working as expected. For example, your solar system has exported less solar energy to the grid than expected over the last 7 days.

This doesn’t necessarily mean your solar system is under-performing. An Amber Status can be triggered because you’ve increased your household consumption of solar energy, so there was less left over to export back to the grid. If you’re concerned your solar system is producing less energy than usual then you can complete a Solar Health Check, our handy troubleshooting guide.

Start your Solar Health Check in My Account or the AGL app

Once you’ve completed your Solar Health Check and addressed the cause of the problem, you may continue to see an Amber Status for up to 7 days as your data continues to be processed.

The status we provide is an estimate of the health of your solar system based on the information available, so we may not always get it right. See the Solar Status terms for further details.

Red Status

A Red Status indicates that your solar system requires attention. For example, your solar system has significantly reduced solar energy exports to the grid for 9 consecutive days.

It’s still possible that there is no issue with your solar panels and that exports have changed due to increased household consumption of solar energy. However, such a significant change is unlikely for most homes.

If you’re concerned your solar system is producing less energy than usual then you can complete a Solar Health Check, our handy troubleshooting guide.

Once you have completed your Solar Health Check and addressed the cause of the problem, you may continue to see a Red Status for up to 9 days as your data continues to be processed.

Unavailable Status

From time to time your solar status may be unavailable. However, this does not necessarily mean that there is an issue with your solar system. It means we’re unable to assess how your solar system is performing.

If your status has changed from Green or Amber to Unavailable, it could be down to the following:

Missing data - normally we receive data daily from the distributor about your energy use, but we may not have received it recently. Once this data is provided, your status should be updated.

Installing a solar battery - the installation of a solar battery will also prevent us from estimating your solar energy production. If you have installed a solar battery, we are no longer able to provide you with a Solar Status.

Unavailable Status will also occur if you have had your solar system for less than 30 days, or recently installed a solar battery.

New Solar Status customers

It can take up to 30 days for new solar customers to get Solar Status. Once you turn on your service, we need to access your home's smart meter data for the last 30 days, then run this through our algorithm, along with other reference sets, to determine your Solar Status. We'll then update this daily to keep you informed.

If you are a new customer to AGL, we may not have access to your historical usage data and will need to build this 30-day data set from scratch.

If we already have your last 30 days of data, it may take up to 24 hours for your first status to come through.

To check your Solar Status and switch on notifications, simply log in to in My Account or the AGL app

FAQs

By default, notifications are turned off for Solar Status. If you would like to receive notifications, then you need to log into your My Account or the AGL app and update your notification settings. Notifications can be received by email and/or mobile.

Your system status is based on the last 7 days of data from your home's smart meter and other reference data. This means if there’s a substantial change in the smart meter data, such as your solar system being turned off, this will take up to 7 days to be reflected in the system status.

If any of your rooftop solar panels are damaged, we recommend you contact a technician to investigate, as this may impact the current and future efficiency of your solar system.

Depending on the timing of the damage, you may continue to see a Green Status ongoing or for up to 7 days.

The Clean Energy Council suggests that owners of solar systems learn basic safety operations and take responsibility for proper maintenance. Your installer should provide a maintenance schedule to help you with this. Maintenance is necessary to ensure:

  • The solar system is operating correctly.
  • Its performance is maintained.
  • It's safe for everyone in the premises and for any electrical workers working on the distribution network.

But there are many more benefits to regular maintenance of your solar system, including:

  • Lifespan - you'll help preserve system functionality and overall performance for a longer lifespan.
  • Safety - you'll help detect faults, damage and safety issues which will minimise the risk of electrocution and fires.
  • Savings - you'll help ensure maximum output which can lead to lower electricity bills.
  • Investment maintenance - this helps to safeguard against future mechanical problems, extending the life of your system.

Always engage a qualified tradesperson to take on the maintenance of your rooftop solar system.
