Application tips

If you're unable to access the online platform, you can also complete our electricity application form (PDF) and email it to aglnewconns@agl.com.au.

For all forms, make sure the supply address and meter details match what is shown on your most recent AGL invoice.

You can also:

  • find your distributor on Power outages
  • get help completing the meter and supply details from your electrician, builder or solar installer
  • include information about any life support equipment when you apply.

Processing your application

After you’ve submitted your application, it will go to the distributor. We’ll send you an email when they’ve accepted your application.

If you have solar and are in New South Wales, Queensland or South Australia, your application will go to the meter service provider for processing (they complete the installation).

We'll contact you within two business days if we need more information or there are any issues.

Meter installation

You'll be notified of the installation date as soon as possible.

On the day, please make sure that:

  • the site is safe and free from rubbish
  • there is clear access to the proposed meter location
  • you’ve provided any gate code information to the distributor.

If these conditions aren’t met, the installation will not be able to proceed. You may also be charged a wasted visit fee. If this happens, the installation timeframe will reset once the issue has resolved and you've let us know.

Your installation will be:

  • on a date agreed with you
  • within five business days of supply being available (for a new connection)
  • within 15 business days if you’re moving from basic to a digital meter.

Sometimes a new meter installation means we have to interrupt another customer’s supply. For example, because of shared fusing in a block of flats. If this is the case, the installation will be:

  • on a date agreed with you
  • within 30 business days of becoming aware that we need to interrupt another customer’s supply.

If you have installed solar, when we’ve received all the information we need from you, a meter installation will be either:

  • within 15 business days
  • on a date agreed with you.

Installation is usually within 10 business days of the distributor accepting your application.

If you have solar, when the distributor has accepted your application, the installation will be completed within:

  • 20 business days for Ausnet Services distribution areas
  • 40 business days for all other distribution areas.

If there’s life support equipment at the address, the installation will be at a time we agree with you.

Final steps

We’ll email you to confirm that installation is complete. Any distributor charges will appear on your electricity bill.

If you have solar, we’ll email you to confirm that you can turn on your distributed energy resource (DER) device.

If you’re in New South Wales, the meter service provider will create an initial record and provide you with a NMI and job number. You can use this information to create an account in the DER Register Portal and enter the details of the solar panels or solar battery in your DER record.

If you’re in Victoria, Queensland or South Australia, the distributor will complete the DER registration.

Fees and charges

The fees for a meter installation depend on your distributor or meter service provider, as well as the work needed. We're unable to advise of these charges before getting your application. When we get your application, we'll give you a call if there are any non-standard charges.

When installation is complete, we’ll become your electricity retailer, if we’re not already, through our standard retail contract. We also have other available offers, including lower cost options. Find them:
