Interview process

Number 1 icon
Initial phone interview

If your application looks like a good match for the role, we’ll call you to get know you a little better. You’ll learn more about the role and AGL, and you’ll be able to ask us questions too.

Number 2 icon
Formal interview

If things look good, we’ll invite you to a job interview. This is where it becomes a bit more formal. You’ll either come into the office or have a video interview online.

Be ready to answer a few questions about how your background and experience match the role you’ve applied for. Try and follow the STAR behavioural interviewing format.

We've prepared some Tips for interviewing.

Second-round interview

Sometimes you’ll have a second-round interview, so you should prepare for this too. We’ll let you know if a second interview is needed.

Number 4 icon
Assessment

We might ask you to complete an assessment to learn a little more about the way you think and act in the workplace.

This is an online tool that’s easy and convenient for you to use. We give you a couple of days to complete it too.

Background checks

Pre-employment background checks are an important part of our recruitment process, helping us ensure we hire candidates who are suitable, qualified and trustworthy.

They also help us protect our reputation, assets and customers, and foster a safe and ethical work environment.

Medical checks

Usually conducted for site-based roles, we organise a medical appointment for you with a doctor and/or physiotherapist. Safety is important to us, and we want to ensure you have the physical ability to perform the role.

Offer

If you’re successful, we'll call you with the good news!

We talk to you about when a good start date would be and how much an appropriate amount is to pay you. If you accept, we then send a formal written offer to you.

Tips for interviewing

A job interview is an opportunity to share information and, demonstrate your personal attributes, strengths and personality.

Get prepared with our Quick tips for your next interview guide (PDF)

Frame and practice your answers using the STAR framework. It’s a great technique to help your interviewer quickly understand all that you’ve achieved

  • Situation: describe a time where you performed a task or faced a challenge at work.
  • Task: explain what you needed to do to carry out the task or deal with the challenge.
  • Action: outline the actions you took, being sure to mention the skills and personal qualities that you used.
  • Result: What was the end result? For example, explain how you solved the challenge, or what you learned from the experience.

  • Dress the part. What’s appropriate will depend on the role you’re applying for, but always make sure you look neat and professional.

  • Be on time. It’s a good idea to plan your journey and allow extra time for delays. If you’re running late or need to reschedule, reach out and let us know as soon as you can.

  • Be authentic. We want to get to know the real you, so be yourself.

For online interviews, find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. Check that you have the link to your interview handy and you can open it on your device.
