About the project

The Project is located approximately 4.5 km to the south-west of the township of Redhill, in the Mid North of South Australia. The wind farm will be located across the hilltops between the Snowtown Wind Farm and the Clements Gap Wind Farm.

AGL acquired Barn Hill Wind Farm Project in 2009 with development plan consent from the Port Pirie Regional Council and the Wakefield Regional Council already in place.

Due to growth in the project scope, including larger wind turbines and the potential inclusion of a battery, AGL sought new approvals through the State Government Crown Sponsorship process in 2024.

On 31 January 2025, the South Australian Minister for Planning granted Development Approval for the Project. This approval is for the wind farm, the battery, and associated infrastructure.

While the Development Approval covers the wind farm, the battery, and associated infrastructure, the battery has a different development timeline. The Final Investment Decision for the wind farm and associated infrastructure is anticipated in late 2025.  The investment decision for the battery is expected to come later. This staged approach is influenced by factors such as AGL's generation portfolio needs, capital deployment, procurement processes, critical equipment lead times and connection approval timelines.

Transmission connection

A new transmission line will connect the wind farm to the grid via a ‘cut in’ to an existing Bungama-Blyth West 275kV transmission line, located about 11 kms east of the Project area in the vicinity of River and Perrins Roads.

Community engagement

AGL continues to engage with landowners, local government, Traditional Custodians, stakeholders and the local community about the Project.

Community Information Sessions are held quarterly in Redhill and are advertised locally.

The Project’s Development Application underwent public notification during August and September 2024 ahead of being granted Development Approval on 31 January 2025. The fact sheet that supported the Development Application public notification period is available here for viewing:

Community Consultative Committee

In early 2024, a Community Consultative Committee (CCC) was formed. This Committee includes members from local government, State and Federal Members of Parliament, landowners, neighbours, community and environment groups.

The Committee is facilitated by an Independent Chair. The Terms of Reference can be found here:

Endorsed minutes (PDF) from the CCC Meetings can be found here:
