Three community organisations have shared in $40,000 resulting from safety achievements during AGL Loy Yang's recent major power station outage.

AGL Loy Yang and its contracting partners Lend Lease, Siemens and Yokogawa allocated funds to community organisations based on the safety performance of employees during the recent multi-million dollar re-fit of a generating unit.

A total of $40,000 was donated to Latrobe Regional Hospital (LRH), the LRH Children's Ward, Salvation Army Gippsland and Gippsland Rotary Centenary House.

In the past decade, AGL Loy Yang and its major contractors have donated over $250,000 to community groups under the Safety Awareness Scheme.

Anthony Fowler, Group General Manager, Merchant Energy, said safety was a critical element of the major maintenance project.

"Significant efforts were made by all involved to promote AGL Loy Yang's 'No Harm' safety vision," said Mr Fowler.

"This was our first major planned outage with contracting partners Lend Lease and Siemens under a five-year contract and it was pleasing to see the level of safety cooperation achieved.

"Everyone worked well together to ensure safety hazards were managed responsibly, creating safe working environments and minimising the risk of injuries occurring."

No lost time injuries were recorded during the Unit 1 outage which involved around 800 AGL Loy Yang and contractor employees working in excess of 200,000 man hours. Over 1,300 proactive safety activities such as safety audits and safety observations were conducted on the work sites.

The $50 million project included significant plant enhancements and the installation of a new state-of-the-art digital control system.

AGL Loy Yang power station consists of four generating units with a total output in excess of 2,200 megawatts.
