In July 2012, AGL Upstream Investments Pty Ltd1 (AGL) reported to the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) that it had breached a term of its Environment Protection Licence (EPL) by failing to continuously monitor air emissions at its Rosalind Park Gas Plant. Although concerned by AGL's breach of conditions of its EPL, the EPA's investigation of this matter found that it did not cause a significant impact to the environment or to human health. In closing out the matter, AGL has made a number of commitments as part of an enforceable undertaking it has given to the EPA.

As part of the undertaking, AGL has committed to pay $150,000 to the University of Western Sydney for the "Love your Lagoons: Place based learning and environmental action in South-Western Sydney Project". The University of Western Sydney's project is a multi-council and school wetland environmental education program for the Macarthur region which aims to empower school students to learn about environmental sustainability through taking action in their local area.

Upstream Gas Group General Manager Mike Moraza said: "We deeply regret the non-compliance with our licence conditions. We are pleased the Macarthur region will receive the benefits the University of Western Sydney's project will provide."

"We hope that this contribution helps reinforce AGL's commitment to the environment."

The Project will be funded from September 2013 and will be delivered over a period of 16 months.

AGL has installed a new continuous emissions monitoring system on one of its engines and has voluntarily agreed to continue conducting monthly independent air monitoring of compressor engines 1, 2 and 3 exhaust stacks in addition to the required continuous monitoring. The monthly results will be published on AGL's website until otherwise agreed in writing with the EPA.

Details of the enforceable undertaking are accessible via the EPA website.
