AGL Energy Limited (AGL) has advised that four generating units from its Torrens Island power station in Adelaide will be mothballed in 2017.

AGL Torrens is a natural gas fired power station consisting of eight generating units with a total capacity of up to 1,280 MW. Four of the older units, known collectively as ‘A station’ and with an aggregate capacity of approximately 480 MW, will be taken out of service.

“Based on the current market outlook AGL has decided that the Torrens Island A station will be mothballed in 2017,” said AGL Group General Manager Merchant Energy, Anthony Fowler.

“This decision will be reviewed if market conditions change materially.”

Mr Fowler said the four A-station units were taken out of service between July and September this year without any effect on supply to South Australian consumers.

“Torrens employees have been advised of this decision. AGL will commence discussions with our workforce about the future consequences for them of the announcement,” he said.
