AGL Energy Limited (AGL) has given more than $25,000 in grants to community groups in the Port Stephens and Newcastle area as part of its Newcastle Gas Storage Facility (NGSF) community grants program.

AGL awarded the money to 14 community groups to fund programs that included helping children develop social skills, providing emergency food packs and improving disabled access for patrons.

“It’s great to follow-up the success of last year’s grants program and again provide much-needed funds to some very deserving organisations in the local community,” said Naomi Rowe, AGL’s Community Relations Manager for the NGSF.

“There was a real diversity of community groups that were awarded funding, which will see benefits to a wide cross-section of the community.

“We gave money to a range of organisations including the local wetlands centre, the Blind Society and the Academy of Sport to fund various health, environment and education activities.”

At least $25,000 of community grants will be offered each year by AGL over the operational lifespan of the NGSF, which is expected to become fully operational next month.

The grant recipients were: Him Do Tae Kwon Do Academy, Hunter Connect Families Inc., Hunter Wetlands Centre, Native Animals Trust Fund, Port Stephens Tae Kwon Do, Raymond Terrace Arts and Craft Show, University of Newcastle, Sailability NSW, The Food War, Royal Society for the Blind, Hunter River Botanic Gardens, Friends of Tomago House, Hunter Academy of Sport and Tomago Bowling Club.

The NGSF will provide gas storage capability for up to two weeks for the Greater Newcastle region, and will be used to ensure adequate gas supply is available for the Sydney-Newcastle gas network during peak demand periods in the winter months.
