Today, AGL Energy Limited’s (AGL) Managing Director & CEO, Andy Vesey, joined CEO’s from some of Australia’s largest and most recognisable companies to make a public statement on climate change, which has serious implications for our customers, the community and the economy.

The statement highlights that investing in Australia’s response to climate change will deliver significant economic, social and environmental benefits for us all and that the businesses are committed to playing their part.

The coalition of companies, comprising AGL, BHP Billiton, GE, Mirvac, Santos, Unilever, Wesfarmers and Westpac represent diverse industries that collectively span 175 countries and employ over 400,000 people globally.

As outlined in AGL’s Greenhouse Gas Policy, we recognise and support action that limits warming to less than two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels (the two degree goal). To do this, in addition to taking action ourselves, AGL is also joining other organisations to support our countries’ leaders as they head to the United Nations Conference of Parties (COP21) in Paris in December 2015.

There, they will seek to negotiate a meaningful global agreement that sets the pathway for a decarbonised future.

This is not without its challenges, for AGL, our industry and our communities. AGL provides an essential service in the form of energy to millions of Australians, of which 88 percent is currently produced through the use of fossil fuels.

AGL is already planning for the transition to a decarbonised future and will play its part, supporting impacted communities and employees, and engaging with communities in a transparent and constructive manner.
