AGL enlists Eagles’ ‘running machine’ in campaign to tackle hunger in WA
AGL has joined forces with Foodbank WA and the West Coast Eagles to take on hunger in the WA community with a campaign that matches food donations to distance covered by one of the Eagles’ most fleet-footed players.
AGL’s Head of Western Australia Natalie Edwards said AGL would donate 500 meals to Foodbank WA for every kilometre run at home games by Eagles midfielder Andrew Gaff, who is known as a ‘running machine’.
“We are proud to partner with Foodbank WA in this exciting initiative and launch the AGL Metres for Meals campaign,” Ms Edwards said.
“We are aiming to donate up to 50,000 meals this year based on the fact that Gaff covers an average of 13 km in each game, which is more than any other Eagles player.
“Working with Western Australia’s leading hunger relief charity is a tangible demonstration of our commitment to supporting the communities in which we operate.
“It also extends our premier partnership established last year with the West Coast Eagles which includes our sponsorship of the players’ shorts and our partnership in the AGL Aboriginal Leadership Program.”
AGL General Manager Sales Kellie Benda said that since entering the Western Australian gas market last year AGL had been looking for ways to support the community.
“Just as we are passionate about providing locals with more choice when it comes to gas, we are committed to supporting the causes that matter most to West Australians. I know this is important to West Australians based on my experience in that state and the professional relationships I have developed there,” Ms Benda said.
“As a new entrant to the market we were impressed by the fact that Foodbank has been fighting hunger in Western Australia for more than two decades, providing more than 5.7 million meals each year to people who are struggling to afford a meal for themselves and their children.
“The bulk of the food distributed is either rescued or donated product, however they now need to purchase more food than ever before to keep up with the growing demand for hunger relief in the community so we urge West Australians to get behind Foodbank.”
Foodbank CEO Greg Hebble said: “We are very grateful for the continued support that we receive from the West Coast Eagles, its members and players, and we are thrilled to be working with the club’s Premier Partner AGL to provide additional food to families in need throughout the state. This really will make a positive impact on those who have nowhere else to turn for a meal.”
