AGL lines up for another season of hunger fighting with footy star
AGL today announced it would extend its successful campaign with the West Coast Eagles and Foodbank WA to donate meals to relieve hunger in the Western Australian community.
WA State Manager Jackie Shervington said Eagles player Andrew Gaff would remain the face of the AGL Metres for Meals campaign with the number of meals to be based on the distance the midfielder runs in each home game in Perth.
“The first year of the campaign was such a success that we are delighted to join forces with the reigning Australian Football League premiers and Western Australia’s leading hunger relief charity for a second successive season,” Ms Shervington said.
“Last year we donated more than 57,000 meals to Foodbank WA as a result of the AGL Metres for Meals campaign and funds raised in an AGL staff raffle.
“This year AGL will donate 300 meals for every kilometre run at each home game by Gaff, who covers an average of 15 kilometres each game.”
Ms Shervington said the campaign was further evidence of AGL’s support for the communities in which it operated.
“Since we entered the WA retail gas market in 2017 we have formed a partnership with the Eagles as their official shorts sponsor and a community partnership with Surf Lifesaving WA through which we donate funding and equipment to all 31 surf life saving clubs across the state,” she said.
“A key factor in our decision to extend the AGL Metres for Meals campaign was our recognition of the growing demand for the services of Foodbank WA which has been providing meals to people who are struggling to feed themselves and their children for 25 years this year.”
Foodbank WA CEO Greg Hebble said: “We are excited to have the continued support of AGL and the West Coast Eagles, especially in our 25th anniversary year. We rely on donations all year around to meet the growing need for hunger relief in the community, and this fantastic initiative will help us provide everyday food essentials to families that rely on us to put a meal on the table in times of crisis.”
West Coast Eagles General Manager of Community & Game Development Richard O’Connell said: “The long standing partnership between West Coast Eagles, our members and Foodbank WA has supported hundreds of WA families. We are extremely excited to continue to support Foodbank WA and the wider WA community thanks to the generosity of our premier partner in AGL.”
