AGL is helping a group of older Australians stay connected with “virtual visits” from their families during the COVID-19 restrictions.

AGL bought tablet computers for Hamilton Base Hospital and its four aged care facilities, after being approached by Western District Health Service.

The health service’s Chief Executive Rohan Fitzgerald said their aged care residents were categorised as “vulnerable” and visitor restrictions were in place, separating people from loved ones.

“We are incredibly grateful for AGL’s assistance in purchasing these iPads to provide more virtual visiting opportunities for residents and their families,” Mr Fitzgerald said.

“Although residents are quite supportive of the restrictions, many have found it challenging and we want to do everything we can to support them to stay connected with their loved ones.

“The iPads are already in use and are making a real difference in difficult times.”

AGL Head of Renewables Jo Stone said the devices were purchased through one of AGL’s community grants.

“Western District Health Service has been significantly impacted by social distancing measures due to COVID-19,” Ms Stone said.

“Not having the opportunity for residents to see family and friends at this time in their lives has been challenging and heartbreaking.

“After successfully applying for a $3,500 community grant, the health service purchased 10 iPads so residents can ‘video chat’ with their loved ones during this time.

“Being part of a community comes with the responsibility to offer help in times of need.

“Through its Community Support Funds, AGL is proud to support the Australian communities in which we also live and work.”
