AGL offers the chance to win thousands of dollars in bill credits for summer energy savings
AGL is rewarding customers who reduce their energy usage and lower their bills this summer as part of AGL’s Peak Energy Rewards demand response program.
The program, the largest of its kind in Australia, aims to reduce electricity demand during peak times and improve grid stability and, in the past 12 months, has rewarded customers with nearly $1 million in bill credits and has resulted in an average 40 per cent energy reduction for participating customers during each event.
This summer (1 December 2022 – 28 February 2023), customers who take part in a peak event can go into the running to win $3,000 in AGL bill credits, with a total prize pool of $15,000.1
AGL General Manager Emerging Business Bruce Hardy said the program was a proven way to reduce customer bills, while also reducing demand on the grid at peak periods.
“We’re really excited to continue AGL’s Peak Energy Rewards program and give customers a new way to save money on their energy bills and support the stability of the energy system,” Mr Hardy said.
“As the weather gets warmer across much of the country, more of us are switching on air conditioners, pool pumps and fans, so energy usage and costs can begin to rise quickly.
“Giving customers control and the choice to temporarily use less energy during a ‘peak event’ means they could be rewarded with credits towards their electricity account if they hit their energy reduction targets.”
Peak Energy Rewards is Australia’s largest behavioural demand-response program with close to 100,000 registered customers. The program launched in NSW in 2018, and has since expanded to Victoria, Queensland and South Australia.
Customers who take part in Peak Energy Rewards can receive up to $10 in bill credits per event when they meet their energy reduction targets. Peak events typically run for between one and three hours on high demand days.
“Last financial year we had a total of 19 peak events across the country where our customers reduced their energy use by a combined total of 217 MWh – and meant some of our customers earned more than $60 in bill credits,” Mr Hardy said.2
“Our customers are telling us they’re looking for simple ways to save money on their energy bills - and Peak Energy Rewards is one way they can do this.
“I want to encourage new and existing AGL customers who want to cut down on energy costs to get involved in this year’s program. The more customers who take part, the more energy bills we can help lower and the better we can manage the demand on the energy network on those high demand days. There really is strength in numbers.
“As Australia’s largest energy-led multi product retailer, we are constantly evolving our technologies and products to offer more efficient and affordable energy solutions for our customers,” Mr Hardy said.
