The best way to pack for a move

We’ve put together a list of packing hacks and handy tips to help you pack your way through moving day and settle right into your new home.

Moving doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. Even the simplest packing tips can be effective time-savers. Here’s how to pack right to ensure your move is as smooth as possible.

Be ready to box

If there’s one thing you’ll be thankful for on moving day, it’s any extra preparation you put in beforehand, like decluttering or planning for your pets. One of the most important things you’ll need to organise before moving is boxes to pack everything away.

It’s a good idea to sit down and think about how many boxes you’ll need for each room and what size will be best. Remember that bigger boxes may become too heavy to lift, depending on what you put in them, so try to reserve them for lighter objects, like children’s stuffed toys or cushions. Small boxes are great for heavy items like books or kitchenware.

Be sure to get a selection of different-sized boxes, just in case, but make sure they’re sturdy enough to carry the weight as well. You don’t want your boxes breaking while you’re carrying things out to the car!

Pack by room

A great way to make sure that your things don’t stray too far from where they belong is to pack by room. Rather than jumbling things up, put all of the lounge room things in the lounge room boxes, and the laundry things in the laundry boxes.

This will make it much easier when it comes to the chore of putting everything away in your new home, but it also makes it much easier to prioritise your unpacking – the kitchen is probably a room you need to have set up before the laundry, for example.

Get packing and moving supplies ready

It’s easy to forget even the most obvious things when you’re in the middle of packing, so the more prepared you are, the better. Write yourself a thorough list of what you’ll need to get everything packed, and make sure you have everything ready a few days before moving day.

Boxes aren’t the only supplies you’ll need when it comes to the move. Things like packing tape, labels, whiteboard marker pens, bubble wrap or newspaper to wrap your valuables are essential.

You won’t be able to unpack everything as soon as you arrive in your new home, so pack an overnight bag worth of essentials to keep you going. Include a change of clothes, toothbrush, snacks, phone charger, and any other essentials that you might need.

Create a packing and movers schedule

If you’re paying for removalists to help you get your things from A to B, you don’t want to have them standing around waiting for you to finish packing on the day. Start packing up the small stuff a couple of weeks before moving house, so there’s less stuff to box up on moving day.
