Usage calculations

Learn how we calculate bill projection, usage and cost so far in My Account and the AGL app.

Projected bill calculation

Your bill projection is an estimated total of what your bill will be at the end of your billing cycle, either for the month or for the quarter.

The bill projection estimate will be based on your electricity or gas usage for the same period last year. If you have recently joined AGL the bill projection will only be available if you have a digital meter. The bill projection will be based on your most recent bill or the average of similar customers or households in your state.

This projection takes into account usage charges, supply charges, one-off credits and ongoing concessions. Once-off government concessions or rebates may not be included. It may also include solar, demand and green charges if applicable. All charges displayed include GST. The projection excludes any pay-on-time discounts, merchant fees and miscellaneous adjustments.

Self-service meter reads and projected bills

If you have a basic meter and have joined AGL in the last six months, bill projection will only be available if you submit a meter read. Remember, your bill projection is an estimate only and your actual bill may be different. To calculate a projected bill:

  1. We estimate your average daily usage based on the meter reading data available, including your reading
  2. We take into account temperature, seasonality, average usage of similar customers in your area
  3. We then update this by the total number of days in the billing period

If you provide your own read within two days of your scheduled bill date, the bill will be sent based on your reading.

Bill projection and 'since your last bill, you’ve used' does not include any credit we may apply if your meter read is lower than expected. That credit will be applied in your Account Balance and will be applied to your next bill unless otherwise refunded.

Download or view the projected bill details in My Account or the AGL app.

For more information on GST, refer to Fees and charges on your energy bill.

Visit Estimated bills for information on:

  • why we might estimate your energy bill (for example, if your meter is hard to access)
  • how submitting your meter read can adjust your energy bill
  • how to avoid estimated bills.

'Usage so far' and 'cost so far' calculations

'Since your last bill, you’ve used' tells you the cost of your electricity or gas consumption up to this point in your billing period. It includes supply charges, usage charges and one-off credits. It may also include solar, demand and green charges if applicable.

All charges displayed include GST. Pay-on-time discounts, merchant fees and miscellaneous adjustments are excluded.

For smart meters:

  • 'Usage so far' is a cost based on the amount of energy you’ve used so far in the billing cycle. It excludes other charges such as supply charges.
  • ‘Cost-to-date’ takes ‘usage so far’ and applies supply charges, any applicable solar, demand or green charges, and once-off credits, along with GST.

For basic meters:

  • ‘Usage so far’ is an estimated cost based on the amount of energy you used in the same period last year or your most recent bill. If you’re new to AGL with this meter it will be based on the usage of other customers or households in your state.
  • ‘Cost-to-date’ takes ‘usage so far’ and applies supply charges, usage charges, ongoing discounts and concessions, along with GST.

Regardless of your meter type, 'usage so far' is calculated by summing the daily usage costs (kWh* tariffs or MJ* tariffs) and therefore doesn't take into account bill discounts. Usage discounts are included however discounts like '20% off your total bill' aren't.

'Cost so far' takes into account all of these discounts, except conditional discounts like 'Pay on time'.

Past usage

You can log in to My Account or the AGL app to get a breakdown of past usage. To view your past usage:

  • on My Account, go to the menu and select ‘Usage’
  • on the AGL app, on the ‘Overview’ tab, select your energy type (electricity or gas) and then select ‘Past usage’.

Usage is broken down by price and the amount of energy used, in:

  • kWh (kilowatt-hour) for electricity
  • MJ (Megajoule) for gas.

Your usage on MyAccount and the AGL app includes GST. Your usage as shown on your bill excludes GST, as GST is added at the end of the bill.
