The Consumer Data Right (CDR), sometimes called Open Energy, gives electricity energy consumers greater transparency around energy usage and costs. By allowing you to choose to give third parties access to your energy data, the CDR enables you to make informed decisions about your energy service.
Under the CDR, you can permit AGL to share data with accredited third parties on your behalf. The data you share relates to your electricity contract and information about you, your accounts and billing arrangements. We refer to this data as “CDR data”.
For example, you might give a third party permission to access your CDR data via their website or app, so you can better understand how and when you use energy, empowering you to find the right energy deal.
No, it's your choice if you want to use the CDR to share your data with accredited third parties. You can also stop any data-sharing arrangements at any time.
You can share your CDR data with any CDR-accredited third-party organisations.
See list of CDR accredited organisations
The types of data you can share:
Name and contact details can include details of the account holder and other individuals associated with the account holder's account.
You can view all your data-sharing arrangements through our online AGL CDR dashboard.
There are strict protocols that apply to both the collection of CDR data and subsequent use of that data under the Competition and Consumer Act and the CDR Rules.
To request access to your CDR data through third parties, they must be accredited by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The ACCC has set stringent accreditation criteria and privacy and information security standards that must be met before the third party accesses any CDR data. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) also regulates the privacy of CDR data.
No. We will not charge you or an accredited third party when you enter into a data-sharing arrangement. In the future, if any data has a fee attached, we will let you know on the online AGL CDR dashboard.
Eligible residential customers can share their data through the CDR.
To be eligible to share CDR data, you need to:
Primary Account Holder
The Primary Account Holder is the person who is financially responsible for the account (their name is on the bill).
Eligible Primary Account Holders aged 18 or over can share CDR data.
Secondary User
A Primary Account Holder (an individual, not a business), may request an additional person aged 18 years or over be allocated to their account for the purpose of sharing data. This person is known as a Secondary User.
To make someone a Secondary User, the Primary Account Holder must first add them to the account as an authorised person. You can also contact us to add an authorised person.
Once an authorised person has been added to the account, the Primary Account Holder needs to contact us so we can set up the authorised person as a Secondary User for your account.
Authority to Act
Where a Primary Account Holder has a Power of Attorney, State Trustee or Court Appointed Authority appointed to assist with their electricity account on their behalf, the Primary Account Holder or the appointed person may assign that individual as an Authority to Act on their account.
If you have an eligible active AGL electricity account with us, but it’s not set up for online access (meaning you don’t have a MyAccount login), you can contact us for help. We’ll be able to validate and verify your contact details if you wish to share your CDR data with an accredited third-party organisation.
You can stop sharing your CDR data at any time, by contacting the accredited third party and withdrawing your consent for them to collect your CDR data. You can also ask us to stop sharing your data.
Note: If you’re already sharing CDR data and want to change how long you share data for, you need to contact the accredited third party.
If you don’t have access to My Account, you can still share CDR data - contact us for help.
Once you’re set up, you can manage CDR data sharing by logging in to your online AGL CDR dashboard at dashboard.cdr.agl.com.au.
As a Primary Account Holder you can appoint someone to manage data sharing for your energy account. This means they can share your CDR data with accredited third parties as a Secondary User.
The Primary Account Holder and the Secondary User must be at least 18 years old.
Once a Secondary User has been enabled, they’ll be able to log in to their own AGL CDR dashboard and authorise data sharing until their access is disabled or they cease to be an authorised person for your account. They will no longer be able to share data from your account if you have no active AGL electricity accounts.
You can monitor the data sharing arrangements that a Secondary User has started, and you can stop them from sharing CDR data at any time.
You can remove a Secondary User’s access to share CDR data via your AGL CDR dashboard.
By default you'll receive email notifications whenever:
You can turn off these email notifications by going to the Account Settings in your AGL CDR Dashboard.
You can remove an individual as an authorised person from your account, which also removes them as a Secondary User. Remove an authorised person in My Account or you can contact us.
To update a Secondary User’s contact or personal information, the Secondary User must contact us to make the updates.
If you have or are a Power of Attorney, Court-Appointed Authority, or State Trustee who can make certain decisions on a Primary Account Holder’s behalf, you may want to set up the ability to share CDR data for any applicable accounts.
An Authority to Act user and the Primary Account Holder must be at least 18 years old.
To set up or remove an Authority to Act user please contact us.
Authority to Act is only available for Residential customers. For business accounts, a Nominated Representative is required.
Your organisation must assign at least one individual as a Nominated Representative before CDR data can be shared.
Even if your business accounts has one or more authorised 'contacts', data cannot be shared until at least one of those contacts or a newly assigned contact is assigned as a Nominated Representative.
We’re not authorised to disclose data for an organisation without a Nominated Representative.
Eligible businesses include all business customer types such as Commercial and Industrial, Multisite and Small Business customers.
To share CDR data, your business needs to have:
We calculate your company’s annual usage at an aggregated level for all accounts linked to your company’s Australian Business Number (ABN) or Australian Company Number (ACN). A contract may include more than one supply address.
If you've been with us for less than 12 months, we’ll use your estimated annual consumption.
Complete the online form Appoint a Nominated Representative for Consumer Data Right (CDR).
We’ll get back to you within five business days to let you know the outcome of the application.
Note that a Nominated Representative also needs to be an authorised contact for your company. If we approve a Nominated Representative and they’re not already listed as an authorised contact, we’ll add them as an authorised contact and they will be able to maintain the business’ account.
If your business account uses My Account, you can remove an individual as an authorised person, which will remove their account access and remove them as a Nominated Representative for CDR.
To remove someone as a Nominated Representative but keep them as an authorised person, contact us.
If your business account is in AGL for Business, contact us to remove a Nominated Representative.
To re-assign someone who was removed as a Nominated Representative, see how to Appoint a Nominated Representative.
Don’t have My Account access? If your business has an eligible, active AGL electricity account with us, but it’s not set up for online access, you can still share CDR data. Contact us for help.
Your business can stop sharing CDR data at any time. This can be done by withdrawing consent given to the accredited third party to collect your business’ CDR data, or withdrawing authorisation provided to us to share your business’ CDR data.
A Nominated Representative can:
To manage or stop sharing data via My Account:
To change the time period you want to share data with an accredited third party, you need to contact them.
To manage or stop sharing CDR data for your AGL for Business account:
If any of the CDR data we have shared about you or your business is incorrect, you can ask us to correct it. We’ll let you know who we shared it with and how to request that your corrected CDR data is shared with the accredited third party.
You have the right to request the accredited third party you shared your CDR data with to delete or de-identify your data. Any CDR data shared with an accredited third party will be handled according to their own privacy and security procedures. You should check their app or website for more information on how they handle any CDR data you have already shared with them.
You can access CDR via My Account or directly from the CDR dashboard. If you've never used AGL online services and need some help, please contact us.
To log in, enter your registered email, then provide the One-Time Password that we send you.
If the customer details in your AGL account and CDR profile don’t match, your CDR access may be blocked as a security measure. If you’re affected, please contact us to confirm your details.
If none of these tips work, select 'Re-send code' on the 'Verify with One-Time Password' page.
If resending your code doesn't work, you can contact us to confirm we sent the email.
If you don’t have access to My Account, you can still share CDR data - contact us for help.
Once you’re set up, you can manage CDR data sharing by logging in to your online AGL CDR dashboard at dashboard.cdr.agl.com.au.
