Fees and charges on your energy billing

The supply charge, also known as the service charge (or service to property charge), is the charge for supplying electricity to your premises for each day of the billing period, regardless of how much electricity you use.

The supply charge is calculated by multiplying the daily rate by the number of days your energy is supplied.

• Electricity daily supply charges may vary depending on the electricity network region you are connected to and what type of tariff you are on.
  
• Supply charges are generally calculated as a contract term amount charged for each day of the time period covered by a bill. They are not related to the amount of energy used during the billing period.
• Supply charges cover some of the costs of maintaining and operating the distribution and transmission networks and some of the operational costs of supplying our customers. Learn more about How energy is priced.

Your usage refers to the amount of energy you have used in a given period, measured in kWh (kilowatt hours) for electricity and MJ (megajoules) for gas.

Usage charges refer to the cost of your usage for a given period in dollars, exclusive of any supply charges, unbilled charges, credits or pay on time discounts.

Usage charges (variable charges) could be made up of:

• The amount of gas or electricity used during the bill period.
• The usage rates that apply under your energy contract.
• The costs of maintaining and operating the distribution and transmission networks, and some of the operational costs of supplying customers.

The majority of costs associated with government green schemes are generally recovered through the usage charges.

Fees may apply for a range of services. From fees for connecting when you move in, to re-connection if you've been disconnected for non payment. They could also include requested meter testing, special meter reads, moving out and any alterations or new connection charges. If we do need to arrange a repair or service on your behalf, we may pass through the fees that your distributor or meter coordinator has charged us onto your bill. For remote connections and disconnections we will charge the fee listed in our fee schedules.

'Debit adjustments' and 'Credit adjustments' are applied for a variety of reasons. The most common reason is an overcharge or undercharge on your previous bill that has been identified after the fact, possibly due to an estimated reading. There are different reasons why a transfer debit may appear on your bill, including:

• a debt has been transferred from another contract (eg. an old address and you have just moved)
• there has been a credit transferred between accounts and the debit is appearing on the original contract
• a refund has been completed post transfer of credit

We do not currently charge any sort of early termination fees to our residential or small business customers. Exit fees may apply for large businesses like contracted commercial and industry customers.

If you receive a paper bill, you may be charged a $1.75 paper bill fee (GST incl.) (where applicable). Some customers may be exempt based on their product and location.

The following customers will be exempt from paying the paper bill fees:

• Staying Connected Customers
• Non-Energy Customers
• Deceased Accounts
• Ombudsman Accounts
• Concession Customers
• Life Support Customers
• Customers receiving large print bills
• Collective and some multisite customers
• Premium Builders
• Some specific products
• Legacy accounts (AGL and PD)
• ACTEW customers
• Active Retail Fee Exclusion lock

If you pay your bill over the counter at Australia Post, you may incur a fee of $3.20 per payment (GST incl.) excluding NSW customers. Some customers may be exempt based on their product and location.

The following customers will be exempt from over-the-counter (OTC) fees:

• Staying Connected Customers
• Non-Energy Customers
• Deceased Accounts
• Ombudsman Accounts
• Concession Customers
• Life Support Customers
• Customers receiving large print bills
• Collective and some multisite customers
• Premium Builders
• Some specific products
• Legacy accounts (AGL and PD)
• ACTEW customers
• Active Retail Fee Exclusion lock

If you pay your energy bills using a credit card or debit card, or any card that uses a credit card payment facility, we are charged a merchant services fee by your financial institution. This may appear on your next bill as ‘payment processing fee’. You can view the Payment Processing Fee amount in your relevant state’s fee schedule.
