Solar billing

Understand how billing works as a solar customer to make the most of your system and better manage your usage.

Finding the right energy plan

The best plan for you depends on your energy habits and solar setup. For example, how much energy you use or how much solar energy your system generates.

If you generate a lot of solar power but don’t use much energy, choose a plan with a higher feed-in tariff.

If you work from home, you’ll use more energy during the day so choose a plan with low usage and supply rates.

Solar credits

You’ll receive credits for the power you export to the grid only after your meter has been installed and we’ve received documentation from your installation company.

Primary account holder name change

Changing the name of the primary account holder on your bill may affect your feed-in tariff.

NSW, SA and VIC - a change in the account name should not have any impact on the feed-in tariff at the property.

QLD - a change in the account name will change your feed-in-tariff. For more information visit the Queensland Government’s Feed-in tariffs.

These details don't apply to spouses of existing account holders.

Make the most of solar

Monitor your energy use and your export volumes throughout the day, to identify opportunities to minimise your bill.

Use the AGL app to:

  • monitor how much solar you’ve exported and what you’ve saved

  • get insights into your everyday usage, to spot patterns and opportunities to save

  • monitor energy use and costs over the past 12 months

  • get weekly summary comparisons with other months.

For battery owners, check your battery’s charge, cycle and count.

When to use your appliances to minimise your bills

Use high energy appliances such as washing machines or air conditioners during sunny hours when your solar system is generating power. This reduces the need to buy energy from the grid.

At night, when solar isn’t available, if you don’t have a battery you’ll use grid power. Depending on your energy plan, you will either be charged:

  • a single rate tariff, where the cost of electricity remains the same throughout the day

  • a ‘Time of Use’ tariff, where rates vary based on when you use energy.

Electricity is typically more expensive during peak times, like evenings, and cheaper during off-peak periods, such as late night and early morning. Homes with a battery system can store solar energy and enjoy flexibility in how and when they use their solar power. Learn more about solar and battery management.

If you've got solar, you can arrange your credits to be paid into your electricity account automatically every quarter. To set this up, contact us.

Transfer excess solar credits

You can transfer excess solar credits to use them toward the payment of other AGL bills, such as your gas bill. To transfer credit from one account to another, contact us.

You can track your usage and manage your solar billing in My Account or the AGL app.

Troubleshooting

Solar feed-in tariff not showing on bill

If your solar panels have recently been installed but you’re not receiving credits, and assuming you're not using all the power generated by your panels, we may still be waiting for documentation from your installation company.

If it's been longer than a month since installation or your system isn't newly installed, contact us.

Solar bill showing 0kWh feed-in tariff

If you received a high bill showing 0kWh feed-in, you’ve either consumed 100% of the solar power you’ve produced, or your solar system isn’t working. You can view how much solar you've consumed on your bill under 'New charges and credits'.
