Read your own meter

Learn how to find and read your gas and electricity meter.

Identify your meter type

Digital meters

'Digital meters' (also known as smart meters, interval meters or comms meters) are the new generation of electricity meters. Unlike basic meters, a digital meter can be read remotely, which means no more bill estimates. Your usage is updated more regularly so it’s easier to budget and understand where your usage is going.

Basic meters

If you have a basic meter, you can get more up-to-date information about your energy use by sending us your meter read. Basic meters need to be manually read at the meter.

Manually Read Interval Meters (MRIM)

Manually Read Interval Meters are a type of interval meter that records usage in 30 minute intervals and cannot be read remotely. These meters need to be physically read using a special device that downloads the meter read data.
