Read your own meter

Learn how to find and read your gas and electricity meter.

Identify your meter type

Digital meters

'Digital meters' (also known as smart meters, interval meters or comms meters) are the new generation of electricity meters. Unlike basic meters, a digital meter can be read remotely, which means no more bill estimates. Your usage is updated more regularly so it’s easier to budget and understand where your usage is going.

Basic meters

If you have a basic meter, you can get more up-to-date information about your energy use by sending us your meter read. Basic meters need to be manually read at the meter.

Manually Read Interval Meters (MRIM)

Manually Read Interval Meters are a type of interval meter that records usage in 30 minute intervals and cannot be read remotely. These meters need to be physically read using a special device that downloads the meter read data.

Find your meter

Most meters are outside:

  • Attached to one of the external walls
  • On the front porch
  • At the rear of your house.

Some meters can be inside:

  • In the hallway near the front of the house
  • In other hallways
  • In the laundry
  • In the garage
  • Under the kitchen sink

If you live in a multi-dwelling building, your meters will probably be together in one place.

This could either be in the:

  • basement
  • carpark, or
  • in a cabinet on your floor.

If you live in NSW, your meter could also be under your kitchen sink.

Your meter should be labelled with your unit number, so make sure you’re reading the right meter. The meter number is usually on the front of the meter.

Read your meter

Before you start

Make sure your meter’s serial number is the same as the one on your last bill, or in the ‘Enter your meter read’ screen of My Account or the AGL app.

Electricity meters

Electricity meter with clock display

The reading for this meter is: 98595

  • If you're in front of the meter, read each dial from left to right. Helpful hint: the dials alternate in direction.
  • If the pointer is between two numbers, note down the lower number. The only exception is if the dial sits between 9 and 0, you should note down 9.
  • If the pointer is resting directly on a number, look at the dial to the right. If this number hasn't passed 0, then the original dial hasn't passed the number yet and you should note the lower number.
