I’m Catherine Mooney, I work in the Corporate Affairs team based at AGL Torrens in South Australia. I’m proud to work for an innovative business that puts customers and community at the centre of everything we do.

 

Baptism by blackout

In my second year with AGL, I took on a new role managing government relations in South Australia. In the week I started the new role, the South Australian blackout occurred.

The next six months were incredibly intense, but I knew in that first week that I was in an industry that was changing rapidly, and this was very exciting to me!

My team and I worked with our internal and government stakeholders to develop the early plans for Barker Inlet Power Station – before securing approval for the project.

Following the blackout and leading up to the South Australian election, I also coordinated a media event about our world-leading Virtual Power Plant. This turned out to be one of the dynamic public events I have ever been part of, and it became infamous in media circles.

 

Having a meaningful impact

As a corporate affairs professional, you want to be in an industry that is ‘issues rich’ – and working with an organisation that is at the forefront of transition and innovation. I’m proud to work for a company like AGL that puts customers and community at the centre of our decision making, and genuinely values diversity and inclusion.

What really sets AGL apart is that we put our own people on the ground in the local communities where our generation sites are located, and where we are planning to build new developments. This means that we have the chance to really become part of the local community – to understand their issues and how we can support and promote local opportunities.

What gets me out of bed in the morning is knowing that my contribution to good social outcomes is just as valued as my contribution to good commercial outcomes. This is a fundamental part of how we do business – and plays a key role in our Social Licence Program.

 

Flexible ways of working

While many organisations would require me to be based in corporate offices in Sydney or Melbourne, AGL has supported me in having senior role based in Adelaide. This means I can enjoy the wonderful lifestyle advantages that a smaller city offers!

AGL’s commitment to flexible working has also allowed me to raise a family and support my ageing parents.

My husband, Ben, works for a multinational company, and we have always accepted that travel (pre-COVID-19) was part and parcel of the job – because it has meant that we always get to come home to Adelaide, where we have a great network of family and friends.

I like to think that we bring an added layer of diversity to decision making, too, because we work from a different location.
