AEMC draft rule on semi-scheduled generator dispatch obligations

AGL has given conditional support to proposed rule changes that would require semi-scheduled generators to comply with similar obligations to scheduled generators when responding to AEMO dispatch instructions. Semi-scheduled generators would have to meet a megawatt target for the end of a dispatch interval, subject to resource (wind, sun) availability. When AEMO has placed a megawatt cap on output, known as ‘semi-dispatch intervals’, the semi-scheduled generator must remain below that cap. AGL was wary of the specific drafting in the rule that could see generators penalised for taking action in good faith, to remain below any megawatt output cap imposed by AEMO. We have asked the AEMC to provide guidance in their final rule determination.
