First Nations programs and partnerships

We aim to build strong, lasting connections with First Nations people, based on trust and shared benefit. First Nations communities are our valued partners and play vital roles in many of AGL’s projects. See how we engage with First Nations communities and partners to create benefits for everyone.

Members of our Reconciliation Engagement Network (REN)

In October 2016, our Reconciliation Engagement Network (REN) formed to recognise, respect and raise awareness about Indigenous history and culture across AGL. This supports the inclusion and recognition of our people who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

The Network aims to create a culturally safe and inclusive workplace for our First Nations employees. We celebrate and recognise significant events and dates through coordinated activities across the year.

We promote actions that:

increase awareness and respect for Indigenous culture across AGL
create a safe and inclusive workplace for our Indigenous employees and those who are interested in Indigenous affairs
celebrate and recognise significant Indigenous events and dates through coordinated activities and communications right across the business.

Our aim is to highlight significant dates for our Indigenous communities throughout the year, and offer opportunities for our people to hear from guest speakers.

BlackCard helped develop our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Capability Framework to build the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to improve the cultural understanding of all AGL people.

Over 550 of our people have completed formal courses through cultural learning providers such as Evolve Communities, BlackCard and Arrilla. We hold informal training though yarning circles, webinars, lunch and learns and on-country experiences like the Garma Festival of Traditional Cultures.

The AGL Loy Yang Jungarra Wannik Scholarship was established in 2020 with Federation University to support Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander tertiary students with their education goals.

The Scholarship is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts or Mathematics) at the Gippsland Campus.

There are several opportunities to volunteer and mentor First Nations people, including at the Clontarf Foundation and Stars Foundation.

These foundations aim to improve the education, life skills, self-esteem, and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women, equipping them to transition into a positive and independent future.

The Clontarf Academy is located at Kurri Kurri in the NSW Hunter Region and the Stars Foundation is at Para Hills High School in Adelaide.
