Operations

Broken Hill Battery

Grid-scale battery in Broken Hill NSW.

Broken Hill Battery

AGL’s Broken Hill battery became operational in August 2024. The 50 MW, one-hour lithium-ion battery, plays an important role in supporting renewable energy supply. It’s one of several grid-scale batteries in our battery portfolio providing energy storage for the National Electricity Market (NEM). It also contributes to our target to add 12 GW of new generation and firming by the end of 2035 as we transition our energy portfolio.

The Broken Hill battery can also provide firming capacity to the NEM as well as additional services to assist grid stability.

The Broken Hill Battery Project received funding from ARENA as part of ARENA's Advancing Renewables Program. See Project Knowledge Sharing Reports here.

Planning and Environmental Approvals

AGL submitted the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for this Project to the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) in May 2021. The EIS was assessed by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment and Development Consent was granted in September 2021.

To view the EIS, please visit the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment’s Major Projects’ portal.

An EPBC referral was submitted for the Project in January 2021. The EPBC referral was determined on 7 May 2021, which confirmed that the Project did not constitute a controlled action (EPBC 2021/8918).

Development

AGL believes Australia’s future energy needs will be delivered through a combination of technologies - gas, hydrogen, pumped-hydro, renewables, firming technologies and industrial developments - all of which will play a role in the energy transition.

AGL developed Broken Hill Solar Plant in 2016 and Silverton Wind farm in 2018. In 2024, AGL handed over the operations of Silverton Wind Farm and Broken Hill Solar Plant to Tilt Renewables. In August 2024, the Broken Hill Battery became operational.
